Pension Reform Bill Heads to the Senate, Says Grell
6/16/2010

After the House overwhelmingly approved legislation that would bring short-term relief and long-term changes to the Public School Employees’ Retirement System (PSERS) and the State Employees’ Retirement System (SERS), Rep. Glen Grell (R-Hampden Township), who has spearheaded this issue over the past several months, issued the following statement:

“The changes embodied in House Bill 2497 will provide significant relief to school districts and their taxpayers throughout the Commonwealth who are facing double-digit tax increases due to the funding shortfalls of PSERS and SERS.  This legislation would pare down the pension spike and institute long-term modifications to the retirement benefits for all future public school and state employees.

“Through our bipartisan discussions and negotiations, we agreed upon a series of reform measures which will allow the state’s two major pension systems to meet their current and future obligations in a way that is responsible for taxpayers yet fair to new employees who will be affected.

“Although my hybrid pension proposal is not fully incorporated into the bill passed by the House, many of the reforms that I proposed in our negotiations on House Bill 2497 have been included, which is why I supported this measure.

“The Senate must still consider this legislation and I am hopeful that it will do so in short order to get this bill to the governor’s desk.”
